VISTA – The Present and Future of Periodontal Plastic Surgery: A Case Report

Abstract

Achieving a perfect esthetic smile plays a cardinal role in radiating health and self confidence, which is often achieved by maintaining an optimal relationship between the teeth, surrounding oral tissues and periodontal complex; lack of any of these results in an unaesthetic smile.

The tunnel technique is advantageous over the conventional techniques because of the early healing, good blood supply, and good esthetics. However, due to its lack of ability to coronalize the flap, insufficient graft coverage makes it unsuitable for a recession depth ≥5mm. VISTA (Vestibular Incision Sub-periosteal Tunnel Access) approach was introduced by H.H.Zadeh to overcome these drawbacks.

In VISTA, the incisions are far from gingival margin and detachments are sub-periosteal that curtails the risk of marginal tissue loss. Although, in the VISTA approach introduced by HH Zadeh, absorbable collagen membrane soaked in rhPDGF-BB/TCP composite were used, in our current case report, connective tissue graft and PRF membrane were used, since CTG is the gold standard biomaterial and PRF is enriched with growth factors that can improvise the possibility of a better esthetic result.

Based on the previous studies and our current case report, it is safe to conclude that VISTA, a minimally invasive approach is a viable and more successful alternative for treating multiple gingival recession defects.
