The Harmony of Pink and White

Abstract

Aesthetics, irrespective of the era and the dominant trend represent a defining element of the individual’s quality of life. Patients with aesthetic issues carry a more or less conscious stigma that gives them a psychological and social disadvantage. Aesthetic (cosmetic) dentistry is a discipline within dentistry in which the primary focus is the modification or alteration of appearance of patient’s oral structures, in conjunction with the prevention and treatment of structural, functional or organic oral disease. In recent years, clinician and dentist’s aesthetic demands in dentistry have increased rapidly, driven by an enhanced awareness of beauty and aesthetics. The ultimate goal in modern restorative dentistry is to achieve ‘white’ and ‘pink’ aesthetics in strategic zones. White aesthetics is the natural dentition or restoration of dental hard tissues with suitable materials. Pink aesthetics refers to the inter dental papilla and gingiva that can enhance or diminish the aesthetic result. The practice of restorative dentistry has a reciprocal relationship with the maintenance of periodontal health. Untreated periodontal disease will compromise the success of restorative dentistry and poor restorative treatment may have adverse effects on the periodontium by increasing accumulation of plaque and inducing changes in the composition of plaque microflora. This poster reports a case that successfully restored the harmony between pink and white aesthetics through combined endodontic-periodontal therapy.
