Minimally Invasive Surgical Therapy – To Enhance Smiles

Abstract

Smile plays an important role in improving aesthetics and radiates health and self-confidence. The perfect smile requires an optimal relationship between the teeth, surrounding oral tissue and periodontal complex. When a disharmony exists between any of these components, the result is a smile that is likely to be perceived as unaesthetic.

Receding gums can be the result of periodontal disease, clenching teeth, grinding, overly aggressive brushing habits, or the natural aging process. Genetics, hormones, and tobacco use can also cause the gums to be more vulnerable to recession.

Periodontal treatment has always aimed primarily at preservation and restoration of periodontal health. Many dental conditions pass by patients unnoticed until they have reached a clinically advanced stage.

Gingival recession can however often be a very visible dental change that is noted by patients and which may cause them to seek the advice of a dentist. The significance of any gingival recession may vary considerably depending on the aetiology, extent and associated symptoms in each case.

In the last decade, because of the ever increasing aesthetic demands from patients, surgical techniques have been further developed and improved. Minimally invasive surgical procedures are available to achieve best results. This poster reviews recently introduced methods in the management of gingival recession.
