Predictable and long term success in aesthetic dentistry

Abstract

A perfect aesthetic outcome of the smile is number one priority when it comes to patient satisfaction, regardless of how complex a case can be.

Whether the dentist choose to have an analog or digital workflow, an aesthetic dental treatment should always start by presenting the final smile design in the patients mouth in 3D, at the very beginning of every case. The treatment planning and the treatment can only be successful if the aim will be to reach to that proposed design, which will be influenced by the techniques and materials to be used.

In today’s world, there is a wide range of materials used in adhesive and prosthodontic dentistry. Every material has its functional, biological and esthetic characteristics on its own.

A successful esthetic outcome is a combination of design, treatment plan, material selection and their handling together.

Clinical procedures particularly in esthetic cases involve so many technique-sensitive steps that will affect the durability and long term success of these restorations. Thus performing these steps correctly depends on our knowledge of the materials.

The variety of materials and constantly changing scientific environment can confuse clinicians and force them to go on with the materials they get used to. Even though companies are coming up with easier and simpler-use products, or dentists choosing the way they hear that works the best, it is clinicians’ responsibility to follow the literature and define their strategies.

Clinicians should constantly update their knowledge about the materials they use in their daily practices so that they can open up their vision and perform the best treatments with scientific-based decision-making.

One should always remember that in esthetic dentistry the most important thing is while combining all this knowledge in our clinical skills, we should finish the case with the best possible esthetic and functional prosthetic outcome.
