Maximising treatment results: The impact of optimal torque on aligner treatment success and stability

Abstract

The use of clear aligners has revolutionized orthodontic treatment, offering patients a more comfortable and cosmetically appealing alternative to traditional braces.

However, the effectiveness of clear aligners is heavily dependent on the accuracy and precision of the treatment plan – particularly in regards to torque and occlusion.

Proper Occlusion ensures that the teeth are aligned correctly, allowing for efficient and effective movement. Additionally, stable occlusion is essential for maintaining treatment results and preventing relapse. Maximising treatment results with optimal torque and stable occlusion requires careful planning and execution. Orthodontic specialists and those providing Ortho treatments must consider the patient’s unique needs and treatment goals when designing the treatment plan, ensuring that the aligners are tailored to the individual’s teeth and bite. Additionally, ongoing monitoring and adjustments may be necessary to ensure that the treatment stays on track and achieves the desired outcomes. Optimising torque and occlusion is critical for maximizing clear aligner treatment results and ensuring long-term stability. This lecture will provide protocols that will enhance the ability of the clinician when designing the digital treatment plan.

Learning Objectives

  • Understand the Role of Torque in Aligner Therapy:
Participants will grasp the fundamental concept of torque as it relates to orthodontic treatment using clear aligners, including its effects on tooth movement, rotation, and occlusal relationships.
  • Analyze Factors Influencing Optimal Torque Application:
Attendees will explore various factors that contribute to achieving optimal torque application in aligner treatment, such as patient-specific biomechanics, treatment planning software, attachment design, aligner trimline and clinician expertise.
  • Evaluate Treatment Success Metrics:
Participants will learn to evaluate treatment success beyond just esthetics, considering occlusal stability, root positioning, and overall functional outcomes, and how these aspects are influenced by torque control.
  • Implement Techniques for Optimizing Torque in Aligner Therapy:
Attendees will gain practical insights into techniques for enhancing torque control during aligner treatment, including attachment placement strategies, auxiliary tools, and refinements to achieve desired tooth movements.
  • Enhance Treatment Planning and Case Selection:
Participants will discover the significance of accurate treatment planning and case selection in achieving optimal torque outcomes with aligners, including understanding limitations and potential challenges related to torque control in complex cases.
