Artificial Intelligence and augmented reality in implant dentistry

Time: 12:00 CEST | Online Event

Abstract

Two new technologies promise to radically transform the world of surgery and implant planning: artificial intelligence (AI) and mixed reality (MR). AI indicates a software or computer system capable of solving complex problems which normally require human cognition and intervention. In dentistry, AI is widely used today for the automated identification and diagnosis of caries and endodontic, cystic or periodontal lesions on two-dimensional (2D) pictures and radiographs (intraoral or panoramic radiographs). More recently, AI has been used for the identification and automatic segmentation of anatomical structures starting from 3D radiographic examinations (CBCT). These functions are made possible by machine learning (ML), through which computers learn rules from data, capturing their intrinsic statistical patterns and structures.

MR refers to a technology capable of generating high-definition virtual content and models (holograms) atop the existing environment, enhancing the user’s perception of reality. A hologram is a 3D model created through photographic projection. The operator wears a headset with see-through lenses that places virtual objects in the real world, thereby augmenting it; therefore, the operator continues to be in touch with the real world while interacting with virtual objects (holograms). In this lecture, Dr. Francesco Mangano will show the applications of AI and AR in implant planning.
