Abstract

During pregnancy, increased hormonal levels can affect the way that the body reacts to dental plaque and this can lead to gingivitis and to periodontitis. Associations between periodontal diseases and adverse pregnancy outcomes have been demonstrated, such as pre-eclampsia, preterm babies and low birth weight babies. Specific plaque removal regimens and professional periodontal treatment have been shown to be safe when carried out on pregnant women, and efficient in reducing gingival inflammation and in enabling periodontal health to be maintained during pregnancy.

The webinar will discuss the factors that link pregnancy with periodontal diseases and condition in both ways and we will present strategies to reduce adverse pregnancy outcomes and reduce the prevalence of gingival inflammation during pregnancy.
