Prof Phillip Calder is a professor of Nutritional Immunology at the Faculty of Medicine, University of Southampton, UK. He holds a PhD in Biochemistry from the University of Oxford. He has held positions of lecturer, Medical Fellow, and Department Lecturer in the department of Biochemistry at the universities of Auckland and Oxford respectively. He has held positions of Lecturer in Human Nutrition and Reader in Human Nutrition at the University of Southampton.
He is currently the President of the Federation of Nutrition Societies (2019 – 2023). He has held the position of Editor in Chief for the British Journal of Nutrition (2006-2014) and associate editor for various other journals related to nutrition. He was a co-author of European Guidelines for “parenteral nutrition in intensive care: (2009) and “clinical nutrition in the intensive care unit” (2019)
He has more than 400 invited, guests, special, plenary or keynote lectures at national and international congresses and symposia. He is listed as a Highly Cited Researcher in every edition since 2011. He is currently ranked 917th out of 5882 Highly Cited Researchers (h index > 100) based on Google Scholar (see http://www.webometrics.info/en/node/58).
In 2020, he ranked 250th in the Plos Biology/Mendeley analysis of approximately 8 million scientists who have published more than 5 papers – this was the all-time/all-fields ranking (top 0.0032% of all researchers). Based on the most recent complete single year (2019) ranked 131st.
As of 18 July 2022: Published 395 research papers, 197 review articles in journals, 30 expert group reports/guidelines, 101 editorials/commentaries/comments, 12 letters to the editor and 74 book chapters. Co-edited 4 books.
