Prof Gutknecht studied medicine and dentistry at the Universities of Bochum, Florence and Aachen. Since 1990 he works as a scientific researcher at the RWTH Aachen University Hospital.
He did scientific research studies in the field of dental laser therapy at the UCSF University California San Francisco, USA, where he received his “ Master in the application of Nd:YAG lasers in dentistry” He completed his Doctoral Thesis (PhD) at RWTH Aachen University 1993 and was appointed as an Assoc. Professor at Aachen University Medical and Dental Faculty in 1998 after completing his Habilitation In 2003 he was appointed as a Full Professor at the Department of Operative Dentistry, Periodontology and Pediatric Dentistry at RWTH Aachen University Hospital, Medical and Dental Faculty.
