Dr Vlaskalic attended the University of Melbourne, Australia where she received both her Bachelor of Dental Science and Master of Dental Science in orthodontics.

Dr. Vlaskalic received a research award from the Australian Association of Orthodontists Foundation for Research and travelled to the United States. There she spent two years at UCLA researching and teaching with Dr. Patrick Turley where maxillary protraction became her major research interest.She spent a further six years at the University of the Pacific in San Francisco. She obtained her Californian Dental License and became Assistant Professor and Director of the Predoctoral Orthodontic Program. Her research interests included root resorption, mentored by Dr. Sheldon Baumrind, and orthodontic treatment outcomes, mentored by Dr. Don Poulton.

In 1997, Dr Vlaskalic became co-investigator with Dr. Robert Boyd in the feasibility of the Invisalign appliance, becoming one of the first orthodontists in the world to use the Invisalign system. Since returning to Melbourne, Dr Vlaskalic works in orthodontic specialty practice, is a clinical instructor at the University of Melbourne and continues to act as a clinical consultant to Align Technology, lecturing and consulting worldwide.
