Periodontal Therapy and Care Today. The Essential Points for the Dental Hygienist

Periodontal diseases can be treated successfully, and cases can be maintained long-term, if a number of critical issues are addressed correctly and efficiently. In this lecture we will discuss the role of the dental hygienist in the therapy and maintenance of patients with periodontal disease.

Even after the best clinically possible periodontal treatment, not all deep pockets transform predictably into a sulcus with physiological probing depth. Repetitive scaling and root planning with steel instruments can cause pain and discomfort and induces substantial loss of tooth substance with time. Non-mineralized subgingival bacterial deposits growing between two maintenance visits can be removed with subgingival air-polishing, an efficient and less aggressive method.

  • What is the potential and where are the limits of non-surgical periodontal therapy?
  • Is removing calculus and removing biofilm the same?
  • The principles of maximally efficient and minimally invasive periodontal disease control
