Abstract
Following tooth extraction, a horizontal and vertical bone resorption always occurs. This resorption reduces residual ridge dimension thus making implant placement more challenging. Placing conventional screw type implants in such narrow ridges often leads to insufficient buccal bone thickness leading to vestibular dehiscence, the main anatomic cause of peri-implantitis and implant failure.
To overcome this problem many solutions were proposed. Placing screw-type implants with reduced diameter can solve the anatomic problem but may cause future mechanic complications such as implant fracture, especially in the posterior jaw. Bone reconstruction by means of autologous bone blocks, ridge splitting and guided bone regeneration may help creating enough bone volume to insure proper implant placement. Nevertheless, these techniques present an increased cost, require advanced surgical skills, and may cause lot of morbidity.
Few years ago, ultrasonic implant site preparation was introduced as an alternative technique to conventional drilling. Ultrasonic preparation proved to be precise while conferring better bone healing since it links both mechanical and biological advantages of piezosurgery. Based on these advantages and following a long process of research and development, a new implant geometry was recently introduced: the Piezoimplant. This implant presents a rectangular shape and represents today a new paradigm in implantology, offering an efficient and minimally invasive clinical solution, particularly in cases of horizontal bone defect.
During this course, clinical solutions to treat narrow ridges from diagnosis to implant placement, will be described. The Piezoimplant will be presented as an alternative and reliable solution to high morbidity grafting techniques. Step by step procedure leading to placement of the Piezoimplant in narrow ridges will be explained based on clinical, anatomic and biologic criteria.
During the hands-on part, participants will get familiarized with ultrasonic equipment and surgical tools, and will apply the step by step surgical technique to place Piezoimplants into animal bones.
