Following the 2017 World Workshop on periodontal and peri-implant diseases, peri-implantitis was defined as a pathological condition around dental implants characterized by inflammation in the peri-implant soft tissue with concomitant loss of supporting bone. Peri-implantitis is a disease with growing incidence that, if left untreated, may lead to implant loss. The etiological factors of peri-implant infections are comparable with those involved in periodontal diseases. Hence, the goals of peri-implantitis treatment must be the resolution of peri-implant soft tissue inflammation and stabilization of the level of osseointegration. This may only be achieved under the prerequisite that bacterial biofilms and retentive factors such as excess cement and calculus are removed from the implant surface yielding a biologically acceptable surface conducive to wound healing.
It is the aim of this course to provide scientific evidence and clinical tips for the prevention and management of peri-implant diseases.
Learning Objectives
Participants will be able to:
- Identify the etiology of peri-implant diseases
- Identify the modifying risk factors for peri-implant diseases
- Correctly diagnose peri-implant health and peri-implant diseases
- Acquire knowledge on the non-surgical possibilities for the management of peri-implant diseases
- Acquire knowledge on the surgical possibilities for the management of peri-implant diseases including explantation
