Abstract

Predictable esthetic outcomes in restorative dentistry require a clear understanding of the relationship between periodontal tissues and prosthetic design. The morphology and stability of the gingiva, the position of the gingival margin, the gingival phenotype, and the supracrestal tissue attachment are critical parameters that must be evaluated during treatment planning. Careful clinical and radiographic assessment allows clinicians to identify conditions that may compromise esthetic results and to plan treatment through an interdisciplinary approach between periodontics and prosthodontics.

Contemporary digital planning tools, such as digital smile design workflows, allow clinicians to visualize the final prosthetic result and plan periodontal procedures accordingly. When periodontal anatomy is unfavorable, periodontal procedures may be indicated before prosthetic rehabilitation. Techniques such as crown lengthening, correction of altered passive eruption, and soft tissue augmentation help establish stable gingival margins and appropriate emergence profiles. Integrating periodontal principles into prosthetic planning improves esthetic outcomes while maintaining long-term periodontal stability.

Learning Objectives

  • Understand periodontal parameters that influence esthetic restorative outcomes.
  • Recognize the role of digital smile design tools in interdisciplinary treatment planning.
