We know the evidence-based risk factors for developing caries, just like we know that fluoride varnish, pH control, and changes in home-care habits are effective. So why is caries in adults still on the rise and why aren’t more adult patients accepting this very important preventive treatment? Knowledge and patient acceptance do not always go hand in hand.

We will focus on overcoming the main barriers for treatment; the time involved, cost to the patient, poor insurance coverage and lack of practice philosophy. Using simple questions and procedures, this course will take you from the waiting room, through the appointment, and home with the patient to effectively reduce their chance of future decay. We will review the method for uncovering the most common risk factors without adding time to the appointment. There will be a discussion on establishing office protocols, which is important to ensure that patients receive evidence-based treatment, not just ‘what insurance covers’.

Whatever your role in the office, the goals are the same; happy healthy patients, fulfilled staff and a profitable practice. When everyone puts risk assessment into action your patients and practice will be healthier and you will be their partner in health.

Learning Objectives

After the course, attendees will be able to:

  • Involve the patient in co-diagnosis of their risk and treatment
  • Apply fluoride varnish in under a minute
  • Establish an office protocol promoting caries risk assessment as an important part of patient and practice health
  • Involve the dentist in risk assessment for better patient compliance
  • Increase practice revenues through a strong caries prevention program that addresses the needs of patients of all ages
