Abstract

Oral health is a critical component of overall health and well-being, yet it is often overlooked in discussions about general health. This lecture explores the intricate connections between oral health and systemic health, highlighting how conditions in the mouth can influence and reflect broader health issues. Research indicates that poor oral health is linked to a variety of systemic conditions, including cardiovascular disease, diabetes, respiratory infections, and adverse pregnancy outcomes. For instance, periodontal disease, has been associated with increased risks of heart disease and stroke due to the inflammation and bacteria that can spread from the mouth to other parts of the body (focal infections). Additionally, individuals with diabetes are more susceptible to gum infections, which can further complicate blood sugar control. This lecture will delve into the mechanisms by which oral health impacts systemic health, emphasizing the importance of maintaining good oral hygiene practices as a preventive measure.
