Abstract
Photobiomodulation (PBM) and Photodynamic Therapy (PDT) represent innovative, non-invasive treatment modalities increasingly utilised in modern dentistry. PBM employs low-level light therapy to stimulate cellular activity, enhance tissue repair, and reduce inflammation, proving beneficial in procedures such as pain management, wound healing, and the treatment of oral mucositis. Conversely, PDT involves the application of a photosensitizing agent activated by a specific wavelength of light, producing reactive oxygen species that effectively target and eliminate pathogenic microorganisms.
This abstract explores the synergistic potential of PBM and PDT within dental practice. The review outlines their mechanisms of action, clinical applications, and the therapeutic outcomes observed in periodontal therapy, endodontic treatments, and oral lesion management. Furthermore, it discusses the advantages of these therapies, including reduced antibiotic reliance, minimal side effects, and improved patient comfort. Despite the promising benefits, the abstract also acknowledges existing challenges, such as standardization of protocols and the need for further clinical trials to substantiate efficacy.
In conclusion, the integration of PBM and PDT into dental protocols signifies a progressive shift towards more biologically driven, patient-centred care strategies, with substantial implications for improving oral health outcomes.
In our practice, we have now implemented the next feature of PBM and PDT with the same wavelengths, incorporating modified clinical protocols in clinics. This advancement has been complemented by motivated patient uptake, supported through continued home care units and structured maintenance phases. Additionally, early clinical observations indicate improved patient outcomes and adherence, highlighting the potential for broader application in diverse therapeutic settings. Continuous monitoring and feedback mechanisms have been integrated to refine efficacy, ensuring sustained patient engagement and optimized treatment results.
