Laser-enhanced orthodontics: Hidden applications and emerging clinical concepts

Abstract

Laser technology is increasingly expanding the boundaries of modern orthodontics, offering clinically relevant applications beyond conventional treatment protocols. This presentation will explore the emerging role of lasers in orthodontics, with particular emphasis on photobiomodulation therapy (PBMT) using diode lasers for treatment acceleration and pain control.

A major focus will be the importance of appropriate laser parameters—including wavelength, power, energy density, exposure time, and treatment protocol—as key determinants of biological response and clinical success. The presentation will progress from the biological principles and current evidence supporting PBMT to practical, clinically applicable protocols, illustrated through clinical cases and evidence-based findings.

The second part will introduce a less explored application of erbium laser technology in orthodontics, focusing on its potential role in the rebonding of ceramic brackets. Clinical cases will demonstrate the application of erbium lasers in managing bracket debonding and rebonding, while selected clinical and laboratory studies will provide insight into its effectiveness, safety, and potential advantages over conventional techniques.

By connecting scientific evidence with real-world clinical applications, this lecture aims to provide orthodontists with a practical understanding of how laser technology can be integrated into contemporary orthodontic treatment, while highlighting emerging opportunities for more efficient, comfortable, and biologically driven care.
