‘Pregnancy, fertility and everything in between’ - How pregnancy links to oral health

Abstract

This lecture explores the relationship between oral health and the physiological changes seen in fertility, IVF and pregnancy. It aims to provide a deeper understanding of how hormonal fluctuations during these periods affect oral tissues and contribute to oral health issues. We will examine the impact maternal oral health and periodontitis has on both pregnancy and fetal outcomes, highlighting the importance of oral health optimisation to reduce any risks. Additionally, the session will also identify and address the management of oral health conditions frequently seen in pregnant women, emphasising the need to work with them to mitigate risk and optimise health.
