‘Biofilm and systemic inflammation’- An overview of systemic health links with oral health and discussing this with patients
Abstract
This lecture will focus on the critical connection between oral biofilm, systemic inflammation in response to periodontitis and systemic health conditions, with an overview of exploring how oral pathogens and inflammation can contribute to diseases such as cardiovascular disease, diabetes, cancer and Alzheimer’s. Attendees will learn strategies to effectively communicate the oral-systemic health link to patients, helping to drive behaviour change and improve overall health outcomes. Additionally, the session will cover practical approaches for integrating systemic health considerations into dental care, promoting a holistic approach to optimising oral health and preventing systemic complications.
Learning Objectives
- Understanding biofilm and its link with systemic health conditions.
- Provide strategies to effectively communicate with patients about the relationship between oral health and systemic health, using this for behaviour change.
- Integrate systemic health into oral health optimisation.
