Abstract

The interaction between orthodontic tooth movement and periodontal tissues represents a key aspect of interdisciplinary treatment planning. Orthodontic therapy performed in patients with reduced periodontal support, thin gingival phenotype, or pre-existing gingival recessions requires careful periodontal evaluation prior to treatment. Clinical and radiographic assessment of periodontal stability, soft tissue phenotype, and alveolar bone dimensions is essential to determine potential risks associated with tooth movement outside the alveolar envelope.

In selected cases, periodontal procedures may be indicated before or after orthodontic therapy. Mucogingival surgeries, such as connective tissue grafting, may be performed to manage gingival recessions or modify soft tissue phenotype, while regenerative periodontal procedures can be combined with orthodontic treatment in sites presenting with intrabony defects. Proper interdisciplinary planning allows orthodontic treatment to become an opportunity to improve periodontal conditions and long-term stability.
