Periodontal – Restortaive Combination Approach for the Renovation of a Fluorosed Teeth

Abstract

A pleasing smile is crucial to uplift self-confidence and to bring about the positive countenance towards life. Dental fluorosis is a condition occurring due to increased ingestion of excess fluoride during enamel formation. This may lead to subsurface porosities that may attract stains resulting in permanent enamel discolouration. Hence the rehabilitation of these fluorosed teeth through a coalition of periodontal treatment followed by restorative treatment leads to the enhancement of the esthetics in the most conservative approach.

This case report illustrates the multidisciplinary approach to rejuvenate the anterior esthetics in patient exhibiting dental fluorosis involving microabrasion, bleaching, crown lengthening followed by ceramic veneer placement.
A 20 year old male patient exhibited yellowish brown discoloration  with white patches on the facial surfaces of anterior and posterior teeth along with the attrition and Ellis Class II fracture on 21. Clinical examination revealed moderate fluorosis determined by using Dean’s Fluorosis Index. A multidisciplinary treatment plan included initial phase I therapy, followed by microabrasion, bleaching, composite restoration on 21, aesthetic crown lengthening on 21 and veneer placement on 11, 21,12, and 22. A one year follow up revealed improved esthetics involving stable gingival margin as well as maintenance of the integrity of the veneers.

In conclusion, precise prior planning and constant communication with multifaceted approach provided to the patient allowed the esthetic enhancement of the gingival architecture and installation of veneer restorations with the most conservative multidisciplinary approach.
