Management of Recurrent Chronic Inflammatory Gingival Hyperplasia

Abstract

Gingival enlargement, a globally accepted terminology for an increase in the size of the gingiva, is a general feature of gingival diseases. It is a multifactorial condition that develops in response to various stimuli and interactions between the host and the environment. It may be plaque–induced or associated with systemic hormonal disturbances.

A case of a 19–year–old male presenting with recurrent chronic inflammatory gingival enlargement in the maxillary left posterior region. A combination of non surgical and surgical therapy was planned. Non surgical therapy included scaling and root planning and strict oral hygiene practice. After reduction in the size of the enlarged tissue, surgical excision of the tissue was done followed by laser ablation, for providing esthetic and functional outcome. No recurrence was reported at the end of 1 year. Importance of non surgical therapy, patient motivation and compliance during and after therapy as a significant aspect in the success of therapy has been established.
