Assessment of Parameters Affecting the Presence of Interdental Papilla Using a Non-invasive Radiographic Method

Abstract

Today, esthetics has become an inseparable part of periodontal practice. Various skills and techniques are used to improve the form and symmetry of the teeth and face to enhance the appearance as well as function of the teeth, oral cavity and face. The presence of a papilla and the preservation of this structure, particularly in the interdental area between the maxillary incisors, the most visible portion of the dentition, is an important concern in esthetic dentistry. The interdental papilla also acts as a barrier in protecting periodontal structures.

During the course of progressive periodontitis and following periodontal treatment, it is not uncommon to have a partial loss of the interdental papilla. The existence of a space below the contact area can lead to esthetic impairment, phonic problems and food impaction. Identifying factors related to the presence of interdental papilla may be useful for the prevention or management of the loss of interdental papilla.

Therefore, this presentation highlights the effects of various factors including demography (such as age and gender) and radiographic measurements of interdental area anatomy that might affect the presence of interdental papilla in the maxillary anterior region in a cross-sectional analysis.
