Abstract

Poorly managed pediatric dental health can have significant long-term impact that extend far beyond oral health, affecting a child's overall well-being, psychosocial development, and quality of life. This presentation will delve into how dental conditions in childhood can contribute to nutritional deficiencies that can hinder development of dental tissues and general growth as well contribute to systemic diseases. The presentation will also address the emotional and social challenges faced by children with untreated dental problems, including low self-esteem, anxiety, and difficulties in learning. Chronic dental pain can exacerbate these issues, making it hard for children to concentrate and succeed academically. Moreover, the economic burden of untreated dental issues will be examined, highlighting the substantial long-term costs of neglecting oral health in childhood. Poor oral health habits established in childhood can persist into adulthood, perpetuating a cycle of poor oral health across generations. Parents with inadequate oral health are often less likely to prioritize dental care for their own children, reinforcing this cycle. While not all children with poorly managed oral health will experience these severe consequences, the risks are considerable, making early intervention crucial to preventing these problems. This presentation aims to equip dental colleagues with the knowledge and tools needed to address these potential long-term outcomes and underscores the importance of comprehensive early dental care in shaping healthier futures for children.
