Abstract

Following teeth extraction hard and soft tissues retraction always occurs. This resorption phenomenon is always correlated to the trauma inflicted during extraction procedures. Several atraumatic techniques were introduced in order to reduce trauma and to facilitate surgical procedures. Ultrasonic technology was introduced several years ago as an aid to extraction techniques since it has a very precise and efficient cutting action. Through this technology tooth separation and periotomy can be precisely performed, thus facilitating extraction technique with minimal bone resorption. Preserving bony socket integrity is essential prior to implant placement in order to ensure long term esthetics and function. Therefore, ultrasonic atraumatic extractions are always performed prior to implant placement.

Recently new piezoelectric levers were introduced as an alternative to conventional levers. These inserts combine their specific geometry to piezoelectric movement in order to facilitate root extractions specially in cases of third molars extraction. Clinical studies showed better efficiency and reduced surgical time hence reduced morbidity.

During this workshop, piezosurgery levers will be presented along with an overview of different flap designs and suturing technique in order to guide the practitioner when performing basic and advanced surgical extractions. Also, Atraumatic extraction technique will be presented along with the advantages related to the use of new piezosurgery technology and its impact on final extraction outcome in implantology.
