Abstract
This hands-on course provides a structured introduction to the clinical use of ceramic inlays, onlays, overlays, and Vonlays. The programme reviews evidence-based indications, material selection, and principles of preparation design. Participants will learn techniques for impression taking, temporisation, cusp-coverage decisions, margin placement, and the application of the Hollow Ground Chamfer. Adhesive protocols and cementation procedures are also addressed. Upon completion, participants will be able to apply current best practices to produce predictable indirect restorations and to make informed clinical decisions based on material properties and tooth-structure preservation.
Why you should attend this course?
Attending this course you will learn:
- The indications for ceramic inlays and onlays
- Why onlays rather than crowns
- How to prepare, take impressions and temporise for ceramic inlays, onlays, Overlays and Vonlays
- How to decide when to cap a cusp
- What type of finish lines and margins you should prepare
- The importance of cuspal angles
- How to use rubber dam when required
- How to cement the inlay or onlay in place
- The correct adhesives to use
- Which composite cement to use
Course Aim
- Awareness of the materials available for Inlays/ Onlays
- Understand the cavity design
- Identify the ‘bulk’ of material required for strength
- Appreciation of the retentive/resistance form required
- Provide an armamentarium to produce these preparations
- Introduce the ‘Hollow’ ground chamfer
- Identify where to place the preparation margins
- Define the rational for onlay or inlay preparation
Course Objectives
At the end of this course delegates should be able to:
- Identify the materials available for Inlay/ Onlay restorations
- Understand the preparation design through an appreciation of material choice
- Produce preparations that demonstrate the correct divergence and provide retention/ resistance form
- Illustrate how the correct use of chamfer bur will produce round internal line angles
- Demonstrate the correct placement and application of the Hollow ground chamfer
- Place preparation margins with an awareness of tooth contact points
- Gain an appreciation of when to extend an Inlay preparation to an Onlay preparation
- Identify the criteria for prescribing a material of choice
- Describe the bonding/ cementation rational for a given material
Course Topics
- Divergence angle
- Resistance/ retention form
- Internal line angles
- Cavo-surface margin
- Hollow ground chamfer
- Porcelain v’s Composite
