Abstract

This two-day intensive program provides complete theoretical, clinical, and practical training in nitrous oxide/oxygen sedation following American Dental Association (ADA), American Academy of Pediatric Dentistry (AAPD), and Dental Faculties of the Royal Colleges of Surgeons and the Royal College of Anaesthetists (UK) guidelines.
Designed for general dentists, pediatric dentists, and other specialists who work with anxious children or adults, the course builds progressively:

Day 1: Foundations — anxiety science, pharmacology, indications, equipment, titration, monitoring, and hands-on practice.
Day 2: Mastery — advanced case management, behavior management, complications, emergency preparedness, enhanced monitoring, and simulation.

By the end of the two days, participants will be able to safely administer nitrous oxide sedation, manage complex clinical scenarios, recognize oversedation early, and integrate sedation with behavior-management strategies—providing safe, ethical, and effective care for children, adults, and special-needs patients.

Course Objectives

Day 1 – Foundations

  • Understand psychological and physiological foundations of dental anxiety
  • Differentiate stages of consciousness and levels of sedation
  • Sedation types: advantages and disadvantages to each
  • Explain nitrous oxide pharmacology, indications, contraindications, and advantages/disadvantages
  • Perform patient assessment, preparation, informed consent, and documentation
  • Safely operate nitrous oxide delivery and scavenging systems
  • Monitor and titrate sedation effectively and recognize the phases of sedation
  • Identify and manage complications and medical emergencies
  • Understand occupational exposure and safety protocols
  • Administer nitrous oxide/oxygen sedation safely under supervision

Day 2 – Advanced Practice

  • Basic and advanced behavior management techniques
  • Apply advanced sedation principles to anxious children, adults, and special-needs patients
  • Troubleshoot technical, behavioral, and clinical complications in real time
  • Strengthen monitoring strategies and documentation according to guidelines
  • Integrate sedation with advanced behavior-management and communication tools
  • Respond effectively to oversedation and airway compromise using emergency algorithms
  • Integrate sedation into comprehensive advanced behavior-management strategies to optimize cooperation and treatment success.
