Abstract

Multivitamin supplements are among the most commonly used over-the-counter products worldwide, often perceived as an easy solution for improving health and preventing disease. However, evidence on their effectiveness in otherwise healthy individuals remains mixed, with benefits shown in specific groups but little impact demonstrated in the general population. This lecture will explore the history, rationale, and evidence behind multivitamin use, highlighting clinical scenarios where supplementation may be beneficial, and those where it may not. By examining current guidelines, controversies, and patient expectations, healthcare professionals will be better equipped to guide rational and individualized use of multivitamins in clinical practice.

Learning Objectives

  • Summarize the global prevalence and motivations behind multivitamin use.
  • Evaluate the evidence for and against multivitamin supplementation in the general population.
  • Recognize specific patient groups that may benefit from multivitamin use (e.g., elderly, malnourished, restrictive diets).
  • Discuss the potential risks, interactions, and misconceptions related to multivitamins.
  • Provide evidence-based counseling to patients regarding multivitamin use, focusing on lifestyle and dietary optimization.
