Abstract

Both reciprocating and continuous rotation nickel-titanium file systems are capable of achieving minimally invasive root canal preparations, preserving tooth structure while maintaining effective shaping and cleaning. The choice between them is guided by clinical context, canal morphology, and operator preference rather than by the movement alone.

Reciprocating systems reduce torsional stress, simplify shaping sequences, and lower the risk of instrument fracture, often allowing single-file completion. Continuous rotation systems offer predictable multi-file shaping and may provide superior debris removal in complex canal morphologies. Each approach carries distinct biomechanical advantages and clinical trade-offs.

Through a series of clinical case reports, this lecture will demonstrate the practical application of both systems across a range of clinical scenarios, from simple single-rooted teeth to complex multi-rooted cases. Strategies for combining the advantages of both approaches will also be discussed.
