Abstract

Biomimetic restorative dentistry represents a paradigm shift in everyday dentistry, moving away from more aggressive treatments like crowns to partial adhesive restorations, whether direct or indirect, that aim to emulate natural tissues following the biomimetic concept originally introduced by Dr. Pascal Magne and further developed by the Bio-Emulation group. The focus is on preserving function and aesthetics with minimal damage to the tooth structure, always prioritizing the survival of the tooth over the survival of the restoration. Currently, patients are increasingly demanding this type of dentistry as they recognize and appreciate the concept of minimal aggression to the tooth. They also seek optimal aesthetics that blend seamlessly with adjacent teeth. However, achieving stable, high-quality, long-lasting adhesive anterior restorations is highly technique-sensitive and requires a proper understanding of many factors, including color properties, preparation and layering, among many others. Throughout this course, we will address all these factors to learn how to pursue and achieve excellence in biomimetic adhesive restorations.

Learning Objectives

  • Understanding of optical properties of tissues and materials.
  • Explain the 3D spatial relation between enamel and dentin.
  • Learn advanced photographic techniques for color analysis.
  • Discussing material selection criteria based on the patient's age.
  • Simplify the shade selection protocols.
  • Acquire layering skills for direct anterior restorations.
  • Demonstrate optimised polishing protocols for achieving perfect surfaces.
