Guided Biofilm Therapy: Key to periodontal and peri-implant health for all

Abstract

Scientific literature has delivered sound data and evidence-based dentistry has led to the development of approaches, which confirm that Guided Biofilm Therapy is a valuable element in periodontal and peri-implant care and therapy. Guided Biofilm Therapy is an overarching concept, that considers many patient-centered aspects as there are, patients’ compliance, patients’ health and oral health literacy level, tooth- and implant-surface decontamination and conditioning, patient motivation and -instruction, as well as patients’ skill control. The latter is fundamental to changing patient perception from doing something for teeth to doing something for the body. Guided Biofilm Therapy is considered to be superior to scaling and root planing as it is more effective, less invasive at soft- and hard-tissue levels, less painful, and time-saving. The lecture focuses on the explanation of the Guided Biofilm Therapy concept and includes the showcasing of examples of non-surgical or supportive therapy and surgical treatments alike.

Learning objectives

  • Appraise the instructional value of plaque disclosing for operators and patients alike.
  • Apply plaque disclosing as guidance during non-surgical as well as surgical procedures.
  • Recognize guided biofilm therapy for shifting from a tooth-/implant-centered to a patient-centered approach.
  • Critically evaluate the benefits resulting from safer and less-invasive guided biofilm therapy compared to scaling and root planing.
  • Demonstrate the benefits of surface conditioning alongside surface decontamination by using guided biofilm therapy.
