This course will cover bridge design in the morning covering different types of design such as fixed movable, fixed, adhesive and cantilever with hands-on practical in the afternoon on phantom heads.

Aims

  • Discuss the reasons why bridges fail
  • Learn about the use of stress breakers
  • Choose which abutment teeth to use for best success
  • Decide whether the tooth preps need added res and ret form
  • Learn when Antes Law is still applicable in 2018
  • Teach you to decide when to plan fixed - movable v fixed - fixed
  • Learn the skills to provide bridges in your practice the next day

Objectives

  • Prepare a fixed movable bridge
  • Prepare a long span fixed bridge
  • Incorporate attachments into the bridge
  • Prepare box and grooves for added retention

DAY 2

Title: Articulator Selection in Restorative Dentistry | Faculty: Prof. Paul Tipton | Time: 09:00 – 18:00

This course is a step-by-step programme in the form of practical sessions, lectures, and demonstrations- delivering the Foundation for Private Dentistry. The course will take you through the theoretical, scientific and engineering principles behind restorative dentistry. The course is ideal if you are:

  • Hoping to acquire new skills and build confidence to take on more complex cases
  • An NHS practitioner and want to increase your private income or move fully into private practice
  • A Principal looking for a course to update your skills using the latest techniques and materials and, in these modern times, help avoid litigation

It is also a perfect “refresher” course if you feel that your knowledge and techniques have become a little dated. The field of restorative and cosmetic dentistry is advancing at a rapid rate in terms of techniques and the materials available. We continually update our courses to ensure our delegates have a competitive edge in the market.

Course Outline

The morning session will consist of an articulators seminar and a practice in the afternoon covering mounting models & setting articulators.

DAY 3

Title: Adhesive Bridge Preparation Techniques | Faculty: Prof. Paul Tipton | Time: 09:00 – 18:00

Course Objectives
By the time the delegates have completed this course will:

  • Critique failures in Maryland bridge design
  • Evaluate the criteria determining the type of Maryland bridge prescribed
  • Describe the applications for: single cantilever, fixed-moveable, and fixed-fixed designs
  • Incorporate design features to resist  forces: lingually, occlusally and coronally
  • Produce preparations showing gingival finish lines of the correct depth and position
  • Demonstrate guide planes to increase the wing height and give retention/resistance  form
  • Present proximal grooves parallel to the tooth long axis and having mesial and distal walls
  • Confine the  lingual groove within  the gingival and occlusal finish lines
  • Respect the preservation of the grooves‘ lingual walls when placing rest seats
  • Confirm fixed-fixed bridge design features show a common line of a draw on all abutments

Course Aim
Attending this course will help delegates:

  • Recognise the causes of Maryland bridge failure
  • Determine the features which are ideal in Maryland bridge design
  • Understand the forces which can displace the bridge
  • Describe how the design features resist the displacing forces
  • Appreciate why we must maintain enamel in the preparation
  • Realise the objective of the proximal guide  plane
  • Predict the consequences of not temporizing  the preparation
  • Discuss the options available for creating space for the bridge
  • Identify the determinants for placement of the occlusal finish line in maxillary bridges

Course Topics

  • ¾ crowns
  • Single cantilever
  • Fixed-moveable
  • Tooth mobility
  • Fixed-fixed
  • Proximal extension
  • Grooves
  • Guide planes
  • Rest seats
