Abstract

The Temporomandibular Joint (TMJ) is a key component of the stomatognathic system. There is some controversy surrounding how TMJ disorders (TMD) can lead to dental and occlusal problems and vice-versa where dental conditions have been implicated in TMD.  This course will focus on anatomical review, clinical evaluation of the TMJ as well as reviewing the various Temperomandibular Dysfunctions (TMD) and their clinical management.

Bruxism is a common condition that is caused by over activity of the muscles of mastication. It is implicated in TMD. The pathophysiology of bruxism will be reviewed as well as different approaches to clinical management.

Sleep Disordered Breathing (Sleep Apnea) is believed to be significantly under-reported condition that can lead to serious health problems. The diagnosis, pathophysiology and the various strategies of management will be reviewed.

Recent studies have shown links between bruxism and sleep apnea. This information will be reviewed and every day clinical implications will be addressed.

The hands on component of the program will focus on clinical examination with an emphasis on TMJ and occlusion; impression making; and recording centric relation and maximum intercuspation jaw relation. Various bruxism and sleep apnea appliances will be demonstrated and how to adjust and use these appliances in clinical practice.
