New Perspective in Non-Surgical Periodontal Therapy

Abstract

The goal of periodontal therapy is to preserve and maintain the dentition. This includes non-surgical instrumentation and supragingival plaque control. The available literature indicates that subgingival debridement is effective in reducing inflammation, probing pocket depths, and improving clinical attachment levels. This presentation aims to review the literature regarding the available methods of non-surgical therapy along with presenting new approaches, especially with the increasing body of evidence in relation to microbiome and the role of different microorganisms, such as ameba and viruses, in the pathogenesis of periodontitis. There will be an emphasis on the supportive periodontal therapy after the active treatment and the different methods that can be employed to assure positive results.
